In brief
Carbamazepine is prescribed for partial, generalised tonic-clonic and mixed seizures, for idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia and for mania and bipolar maintenance. Tegretol and Teril are Australian brands.
Epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia and mood disorders: the carbamazepine indications
The Teril entry on healthdirect lists the kinds of epilepsy carbamazepine is used in: partial seizures, simple or complex; generalised seizures with a tonic-clonic element; and mixed seizure patterns. The Teril entry also describes its use on its own or with other epilepsy medicines. Outside epilepsy, healthdirect names idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, mania, and keeping bipolar disorder stable over the longer term. The Tegretol leaflet uses everyday language for the same ground: fits, sudden bouts of pain in the face that keep coming back, mania and bipolar mood disorder.
This listing shows carbamazepine 100 mg, 200 mg and 400 mg and does not state whether the product is a standard or controlled-release form. It does not name the manufacturer of the product supplied, so check the label on the pack you receive and confirm with your prescriber or pharmacist that it matches your prescription.
The 100 mg strength in 90, 180 and 360 unit packs
Compare packs of the same strength. These examples are for 100 mg and are calculated from the listed prices at the shop’s Australian-dollar rate on 9 October 2026, before delivery or other checkout charges.
| Strength | Pack size | Pack price | Price per unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 mg | 90 | A$91.95 | A$1.02 |
| 100 mg | 180 | A$158.05 | A$0.88 |
| 100 mg | 360 | A$290.25 | A$0.81 |
With the 90 pack as the reference, each unit is about 14.1% cheaper in the 180 pack and about 21.1% cheaper in the 360 pack.
A lower price per unit means a larger upfront payment. Choose only the quantity and strength appropriate to your prescription, and check the expiry date. Prices can change, so confirm the current pack price before ordering.
Where carbamazepine falls short: certain seizure types and everyday head pain
Three seizure types, absence, atonic and myoclonic, are not helped by carbamazepine, healthdirect notes, and status epilepticus is outside its role. Ordinary headaches and minor facial pain are likewise not what it is for.
Plain, CR and liquid Tegretol under Novartis sponsorship, and the S4 brand Teril
Novartis Pharmaceuticals Australia sponsors Tegretol, which appears on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods under entries including TEGRETOL 100. Its consumer medicine information describes 100 mg and 200 mg tablets, 200 mg and 400 mg controlled-release (CR) tablets, and a suspension. A second brand, Teril, is listed as a 200 mg carbamazepine tablet without a coating, and its schedule is S4 (Prescription Only Medicine). Neither Tegretol nor Teril is named as the product supplied here.
Lupus, porphyria, heart block and other exclusions in the Tegretol leaflet
Tegretol is not for anyone allergic to carbamazepine or for people with a blood disorder, serious liver disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, hepatic porphyria or atrioventricular (AV) block. The leaflet also rules out pairing it with tricyclic antidepressants or MAOIs, the monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
Ancestry screening, possible birth defects and less reliable contraceptive pills
A blood test before the first dose may be required for anyone with Han Chinese or Thai heritage, given their risk of serious skin reactions. The leaflet notes a possible risk of birth defects during pregnancy. Because Tegretol weakens the effect of contraceptive pills, hormonal contraception should be backed up with a non-hormonal method.
Taking Tegretol with food and water: no crushing CR tablets, alcohol or grapefruit juice
Tegretol goes down with a drink of water, either with a meal or after one, and CR tablets must not be crushed. Grapefruit juice and alcohol are both to be avoided. Your prescriber decides the dose and how often it is taken.
Sleepiness, vision changes and skin reactions listed in the Tegretol leaflet
The Tegretol leaflet does not sort its possible effects by frequency or severity. It mentions swelling in any part of the body, tiredness or sleepiness, putting on weight, nausea and vomiting, confusion, hair loss, fever, difficulty breathing, seizures, a dry mouth, dizziness or fainting, poorer coordination, difficulty speaking, weak or painful muscles, numbness or tingling, a changed sense of taste, hallucinations, depression, agitation, aggression, blurred or double vision, and red, itchy skin or other skin problems.
Tegretol and Teril both kept below 30 °C, Tegretol in a dry place
Each brand has a storage limit of below 30 °C, and for Tegretol the leaflet also asks for dry conditions. Follow the storage directions on the pack you receive.
