The CMI sets out several situations in which Brilinta is not to be used: an existing bleeding problem, for example bleeding in the stomach or bowel caused by an ulcer; severe liver disease; and any previous bleed into the brain, known as a haemorrhagic stroke. It is also unsuitable for people currently taking ritonavir, atazanavir, nefazodone, ketoconazole or clarithromycin.

While on Brilinta you are more prone to bleeding, especially during surgery and dental procedures, the leaflet notes. Taking it alongside anti-inflammatory painkillers (NSAIDs), some anticoagulant blood thinners or SSRI antidepressants can add to that risk. Ticagrelor may also leave the heartbeat slow or uneven, and shortness of breath is listed as common, reported by more than 10% of users. Do not give up the medicine without first talking to your doctor.
