In brief
A macrolide medicine, erythromycin in the Australian E-Mycin leaflet treats bacterial infections, helps control acne alongside other acne treatments and protects some penicillin-allergic heart patients from infection.
Bacterial infection, acne and protection for certain heart conditions
E-Mycin is an erythromycin brand, and its consumer medicine information on medsinfo places erythromycin among the macrolide antibiotics. The leaflet gives three purposes: treating infections caused by bacteria, controlling acne when other acne medicines are used as well, and preventing infection in penicillin-allergic people who have rheumatic disease, congenital heart disease or another acquired valvular heart disease.
This listing shows erythromycin 250 mg and 500 mg. It does not name the manufacturer of the product supplied, so check the label on the pack you receive and confirm with your prescriber or pharmacist that it matches your prescription.
500 mg erythromycin from a 30 pack up to a 240 pack
Compare packs of the same strength. These examples are for 500 mg and are calculated from the listed prices at the shop’s Australian-dollar rate on 9 October 2026, before delivery or other checkout charges.
| Strength | Pack size | Pack price | Price per unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 mg | 30 | A$63.21 | A$2.11 |
| 500 mg | 120 | A$199.72 | A$1.66 |
| 500 mg | 240 | A$354.92 | A$1.48 |
Set against the 30 pack, the price of each unit comes down by about 21.0% in the 120 pack and by about 29.8% in the 240 pack.
A lower price per unit means a larger upfront payment. Choose only the quantity and strength appropriate to your prescription, and check the expiry date. Prices can change, so confirm the current pack price before ordering.
The E-Mycin brand behind the quoted facts, and Zithromax as a separate drug
The E-Mycin uses and safety details quoted here come from its leaflet, revised in June 2026, and describe that brand rather than the product sold here. Zithromax should not be confused with it: according to the Zithromax consumer leaflet, it contains azithromycin, which is an azalide within the wider macrolide class, and people with an erythromycin allergy do not take it.
No help against colds or flu, and other limits on erythromycin use
Colds and influenza are caused by viruses, so erythromycin has no effect on them. The leaflet excludes people allergic to erythromycin or to any macrolide, people with severe liver disease, and people whose heart rhythm is disturbed. Some medicines interact with it dangerously, terfenadine, cisapride and simvastatin among them, and the leaflet gives the complete list.
Completing E-Mycin treatment, and its pregnancy and breastfeeding advice
E-Mycin is taken until the course is finished, including after symptoms improve. The dose varies with the kind of infection and how severe it is. Pregnancy and breastfeeding call for a talk with your doctor about the balance of risks and benefits.
Less serious, serious and very serious effects in the E-Mycin leaflet
At the less serious end, the leaflet lists nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, oral or vaginal thrush, headache and fever. Its serious group includes jaundice, seen as yellowing of the skin or eyes, problems with hearing or vision, an irregular heartbeat, muscle pain, dizziness, hallucinations and drowsiness. The very serious category covers diarrhoea that is severe, watery or bloody, and an allergic reaction, which may show up as rash, itch, hives, a swollen face, lips or tongue, wheeze or difficulty breathing.
Keeping E-Mycin tablets under 30 °C
For E-Mycin tablets, the leaflet gives a storage limit of below 30 °C. Follow the storage directions on the pack you receive.
