In brief
Keflex contains cefalexin and, according to its Australian leaflet, treats bacterial infections of the airways, sinuses, middle ear, skin and soft tissue, kidneys and bladder.
From tonsils and lungs to the bladder: bacterial infections in the Keflex leaflet
The Keflex leaflet published on myDr lists bacterial infections that cefalexin is used for. In the respiratory tract these include the throat, the tonsils, the chest and the lungs. The leaflet adds sinusitis, otitis media in the middle ear, infections of skin and soft tissue, and infections affecting the kidneys or bladder.
This listing shows cefalexin 250 mg and 500 mg. It does not name the manufacturer of the product supplied, so check the label on the pack you receive and confirm with your prescriber or pharmacist that it matches your prescription.
500 mg cefalexin unit prices at 60, 120 and 180 per pack
Compare packs of the same strength. These examples are for 500 mg and are calculated from the listed prices at the shop’s Australian-dollar rate on 9 October 2026, before delivery or other checkout charges.
| Strength | Pack size | Pack price | Price per unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 mg | 60 | A$140.81 | A$2.35 |
| 500 mg | 120 | A$257.20 | A$2.14 |
| 500 mg | 180 | A$364.98 | A$2.03 |
Measured from the 60 pack, a unit works out about 8.7% cheaper in the 120 pack and about 13.6% cheaper in the 180 pack.
A lower price per unit means a larger upfront payment. Choose only the quantity and strength appropriate to your prescription, and check the expiry date. Prices can change, so confirm the current pack price before ordering.
Aspen Pharmacare, two ARTG capsule records, a liquid form and Ibilex
In Australia, Keflex is sponsored by Aspen Pharmacare Australia, and the leaflet carries a January 2024 revision. Keflex comes as 250 mg and 500 mg capsules and as an oral suspension in 125 mg/5 mL and 250 mg/5 mL strengths. Its 250 mg capsule blister pack is listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods under ARTG 73522, and the 500 mg pack under ARTG 73523. Ibilex is the name of a different Australian cefalexin brand. These registrations relate to Keflex capsule blister packs only; they say nothing about the registration of the product on this page.
Who should not take cefalexin, and why kidney or liver disease matters
An allergy to cefalexin, to any other cephalosporin, to penicillin or to one of the ingredients means Keflex is not suitable. If you have a kidney or liver condition, the leaflet calls for caution.
Persistent diarrhoea as a warning sign, plus pregnancy and breastfeeding
With persistent diarrhoea, the leaflet warns of a risk of severe colitis. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are topics it asks you to talk over with your doctor.
Finishing cefalexin as prescribed, mealtimes, probenecid and metformin
The leaflet allows Keflex to be swallowed with food or without it. What matters is finishing the full course you were prescribed, at the dose your prescriber sets. Two interacting medicines appear in the leaflet, probenecid and metformin; anyone on metformin is asked to confirm with a doctor or pharmacist.
Thrush, nausea and headache, and the signs that need urgent help
Among its common effects, the leaflet names thrush in the mouth or vagina, loose bowels (diarrhoea), feeling or being sick, dizziness, fatigue, abdominal pain and headache. Seek medical help at once for seizures, confusion, jaundice, a severe allergic reaction, or severe bloody diarrhoea accompanied by fever.
Two temperature ceilings: 25 °C for 250 mg, 30 °C for 500 mg
Storage differs by strength in the Keflex leaflet: 250 mg capsules below 25 °C, 500 mg capsules below 30 °C. Follow the storage directions on the pack you receive.
